A double concern in Gurugram’s Sadar Bazar: Crowd and crowd safety. Gurgaon News – Times of India

Gurugram: With swelling in the crowd feeling The market and unauthorized street vendors have made the market even more congested. Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) launched a three-day anti-encroachment drive on Monday. Once the encroachments are removed, MCG will re-implement its vehicle-free scheme to decongest the market.
“We have appointed a group of 40 enforcement team members to carry out the operation. We are confiscating the vehicles of illegal vendors and the products being sold by them. We seized around five vehicles on Monday. With the opening of markets and shops, the encroachers have also returned. While in some places the shop owners have encroached on the main road, there are also some places where the street vendors have put up their vehicles. In the last few days we have received several complaints in this matter,” said Jitendra Garg, Joint Commissioner-2, MCG.
MCG officials said the number of illegal vendors has now increased as people have started coming out of their homes and shopping for Raksha Bandhan and other festivals will take place soon.
“The first step is to remove the encroachment from the market. Then, we will re-implement the vehicle-free scheme for the main road of the market extending from the post office to Jama Masjid. This time, the vehicle-free scheme will be more strict as the threat of third wave is looming over us and we want to decongest our markets,” Garg said.
Before the second wave, MCG had conducted two tests in the first week of March and April to make Sadar Bazar vehicle-free. In the trial, MCG had allowed designated parking spaces for only two-wheelers and cars in the market. The entire section was adorned by plants and benches were also set up. The civic body had planned to deploy volunteers in the second phase, however, the pandemic hit and the lockdown led to the closure of all markets.
Meanwhile, traders said that with the return of shopkeepers to the market, it is important that the authorities ensure their safety. “The crowd Growing slowly and around 70% of the market is occupied by the vendors plying in front of the shops. The entire market supports MCG to remove encroachments, as it makes the market overcrowded and unsafe for shopkeepers during the pandemic,” said Roshan Lal Mangla, president of Sadar Bazar traders association.
While the return of shopkeepers is great for their business, shop owners raised concerns over people not wearing masks in the market. “People are not wearing masks. They think the pandemic is over. We will appeal to the authorities to start a massive challan campaign against those not wearing masks in Sadar Bazar. We ask them to wear masks. But we are not the authority,” Mangla added.
