UP: A man questioned a cop about not wearing his name badge, only to be slapped by another officer who also hurled abuses at him.

Indian police officers are required to wear badges displaying their name and designation while on duty. This practice serves several purposes such as accountability, public trust and identification. So, when a man crossed paths with a cop who was not wearing his name badge, he asked about it. What followed next was shocking and unexpected. The cop responded by slapping the journalist and hurling abuses at him.

“Jaunpur: When asked the cop about the nameplate, got a slap on my ear. The case is from Sureri police station area of Jaunpur,” reads the caption to the video shared on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The video opens to show a man asking a cop for the name badge and if he doesn’t have the right to wear one. The cop responds by saying that he has the right to wear it. As the video goes on, the man says, “Nameplate kyun nahi lagaya, aise ham kaise manenge… [“Why aren’t you wearing a nameplate? How are we supposed to trust you like this]?”

The camera then shifts to another cop who displays his name badge. The man once again questions why the first cop isn’t wearing a name badge and asks for an explanation. This is when the cop loses his temper, slaps the man, and starts hurling abuses at him.
