India clinched a historic 20th medal in Paris on Tuesday to register their best-ever showing at the Paralympics with five medals coming the way of the tricolour on Day 6 of the multi-sport extravaganza.

Sprinter Deepthi Jeevanji got the ball rolling on the day with her women’s 400m T20 bronze for the country’s 16th medal of the campaign.

Javelin throwers Ajeet Singh and Sundar Singh Gurjar struck silver and bronze in the Men’s f46 event to take India’s tally to 18 before another silver-bronze double in the men’s high jump t63 event thanks to Sharad Kumar and Mriyappan Thangavelu helped India surpass their previous best showing of 19 medals at Tokyo 2020 and register a new all-time high haul.

Top Performances

Preethi Pal created history by claiming India’s first-ever track medal when she won a bronze medal in Women’s 100m T35 (Athletics) and went on to claim another bronze in Women’s 200m T35 (Athletics).

Shooter Avani Lekhara became a two-time Paralympic gold medallist when she won the Women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 in Paris, defending her title from Toyko 2020.

The women Para-shuttlers also created history by finishing at the podium in the Paralympics for the first time. Out of the 5 Para-badminton medals, 3 have been won by women Para-badminton athletes. Thulasimathi Murugesan won the first-ever medal for women’s Para-badminton athlete from India when she won silver in Women’s singles SU5.

Sumit Antil not only defended his Men’s Javelin throw F64 from Tokyo 2020, but also shattered the World Record multiple times.

17-year-old Sheetal Devi became the youngest Paralympic medallist for India when she combined with Rakesh Kumar to claim Mixed team compound open bronze in Archery.
