Tovino Thomas speaks out on the Hema Committee report, stressing the need for societal change to prevent sexual misconduct beyond just the Malayalam film industry.

As the Hema Committee report sheds light on rampant sexual misconduct in the Malayalam film industry, actor Tovino Thomas believes it’s not just a problem confined to one region or industry. In an exclusive conversation with News18, Tovino shared his thoughts on the significance of the report and the broader implications for society.

“I don’t find the generalisation that it only happens in the Malayalam industry or only in the film industry very positive. It happens everywhere, in all workplaces, and we’re not just talking about India—it’s a global issue,” Tovino said. He emphasised the importance of initiatives like the Hema Committee, stating, “The Hema Commission, or commissions like it, will solve a lot of problems, not in a single day, but it’s the beginning. People who have done terrible things to others should be punished, no question about that. But more than that, I’m expecting a change in people’s mindsets. From now on, no one should dare to do such things again.”

Tovino also spoke about the necessity for societal transformation: “True, whatever happened should be addressed, but we also need to ensure that it never happens again. Commissions and committees like this will help bring about that change and accelerate it. I believe society has its own way of correcting itself, and I’ve been observing that society is indeed correcting itself. But movements like this will definitely speed up the process.”

Touching upon the perception of the film industry as male-dominated, Tovino posed a critical question: “When news comes out, where does it go? To this male-dominated society. It shouldn’t just stay in the news for two days and then be forgotten. Instead, it should lead to real change, ensuring that women, children, and men are safe in any workplace.”

Actress Krithi Shetty, who also stars alongside Tovino in the upcoming fantasy drama Ajayante Randam Moshanam, shared her views on the issue. “It’s very unfortunate that it took so long and all these bad experiences to make it happen. It’s heartbreaking to hear about, but it’s definitely great that people are taking a stand for themselves. Their bravery is commendable, and they have every right to be honest and to stand up for themselves. I believe that this awareness will bring about change,” she said.

As Ajayante Randam Moshanam gears up for its release on September 12, Tovino and Krithi remain hopeful that conversations like these will continue to pave the way for a safer and more equitable industry.
