Suparna Anand opens up about exiting Mollywood.

‘Vaishali’ actress Suparna Anand claims casting couch has been in the industry since ‘time immemorial’.

Malayalam actress Suparna Anand, who is best known for her role in the ‘Nyan Gandharvan’ and ‘Vaishali’, said that casting couch has prevailed in Mollywood for a long time now. The actress, who left the Malayalam film industry after working in it for just four years, said that she opted to leave Mollywood because of the pressures she faced during her stint in it. The revelations came about amid the ongoing wave of MeToo movement.

According to OnManorama, Suparna said, “It is irrelevant to question why people decide to respond after a period of 34 years. I worked in the Malayalam film industry only for four years. But I had to leave because of the pressures within the film industry. Casting couch has been there since time immemorial.”

As quoted by Asianet News, the actress added, “The reason I left the industry is because I was not ready for anything of this sort. Everybody is not ready for it. There are people who are ready for it. I would not like to name anybody. I don’t think it’s a great idea to say it after 35 years. It’s too many years, it’s not worth it.”

She also questioned Mohanlal and Mammootty’s silence on the cases that have been coming to light in the past few days. For the unversed, the superstars have not commented on the sexual harassment cases that have been coming to light. To top it off, Mohanlal even stepped down as the President of AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists) as more cases began coming to light.

Besides speaking about Mohanlal and Mammootty, Suparna also criticised actor-politician Mukesh. She slammed him for not stepping down as an MLA after he was accused of sexual assault. For the unversed, an FIR has been registered against Mukesh after a female actor accused him of rape. It is reported that Mukesh has approached Principal Sessions Court in Ernakulam for anticipatory bail and sought interim direction. Court gave interim order that he should not be arrested till September 3.

“Mukesh should resign or he should prove it. If you are coming in the society to take care of the society, you have to be a clean person. How can I an MLA who is already convicted of something, who is charged with something? That is not right. He himself should do it. And do prove it and then come back,” she said.

The cases of sexual assault in the Malayalam film industry are being reported ever since the findings of the Justice Hema Committee Report were made public earlier this month. Several actresses have accused male members of the industry of harassing them.
