An ancient Shiva temple is situated near the pond, where a mysterious tunnel is spotted.

The historic Bhailadih (Bhuleshwar Nath) Tila located in Mahua Dabar Gram Panchayat of Gaur Vikas Khand of the Basti district in Uttar Pradesh is enshrined in mystery. The historic site is spread over about 200 acres. According to the villagers, when the pond was excavated, a paved road, sakhu saplings and brick walls were found about 15 to 20 feet below.

An ancient Shiva temple is situated near the pond, In the vicinity of which, there is a mysterious tunnel. People believe that this tunnel is about 5 kilometres long. The entrance of the tunnel was sealed with bricks and stones 40 feet below, while an iron gate was installed at the main entrance outside. Many legends are prevalent in the area around this tunnel and temple, making this place even more mysterious.

Around 1250 AD, the Tharu community is believed to have inhabited this area and used it as a place of worship. During an excavation of the mound some years ago, long swords and 10-foot skeletons were uncovered, along with small gold statues and coins. A team led by Narsingh, the regional archaeological officer from Gorakhpur, determined that the brick and pottery fragments found here date back to between the sixth century BC and 1250 AD, indicating that this site was likely a city 2,600 years ago.

The place is rich in folklore as the locals here believe in many mythical legends around the site. Ram Asare, a villager, claims that the king used the soil from this pond to create the mound. He also recounted a tale of a golden boat that would appear on the pond at night, transporting the king, queen, and fairies. There is a belief that a significant amount of gold and silver is concealed within the Shiva temple.

The locals also believe the treasure is guarded by supernatural forces. Hence, no one can attain it. A few years ago, a barber discovered gold and silver in a pot while ploughing but after his bullock died and mysterious sounds emerged from the treasure, he decided to return it to its original spot. The villagers believe that further excavation could reveal larger bricks and the foundations of ancient houses, which would add to the historical significance and antiquity of this site.
