A shocking incident occurred at the Cohanzick Zoo in New Jersey when a US woman climbed over the fence into the Bengal tiger enclosure on Sunday, August 18. The woman came perilously close to being bitten by the wild cat when she inserted her fingers through the inner fencing as the tiger approached her within inches. The Bridgeton Police Department confirmed the incident on their Facebook page, including a video showing the woman in a dangerous proximity to the tiger.

According to a report by People, the police later removed the video from their social media page. However, Fox reporter Steve Keeley shared the clip of the incident on his X account. The video shows the woman, dressed in a dark top and white shorts, standing dangerously close to the tiger, attempting to touch it. The tiger retaliated by swatting and nearly biting her hand before the woman managed to climb back over the wooden barrier, escaping the enclosure. As per the outlet, police authorities are currently searching for the woman who trespassed into the tiger’s enclosure.

In his post, Keeley noted, “Despite the signs that clearly state ‘Do Not Climb Over The Fence’ at Fence at the Cohanzick Zoo in Cumberland County, Bridgeton Police hope the public can help them identify the woman who nearly got bit by one of the two 7-year-old, 500-pound tigers who live there.”

John Medica, Director of Recreation and Public Affairs for the City of Bridgeton, expressed in a statement that the safety of their animals, guests and visitors is their “top priority.”

“Any visitor behaviour that places the animals, staff and members of the public in a potentially dangerous situation is unacceptable and will be addressed accordingly,” Medica added.

Since being shared online, the video has amassed over 40,000 views, drawing a range of reactions from social media users who condemned the woman for her reckless behaviour.

One commenter remarked, “Shame she didn’t get eaten. Natural selection. My next guess would be that she’ll be calling a lawyer to sue the zoo.”

Another expressed, “Id love to say I wish this idiot got mauled, however, unfortunately, the tiger would’ve been the one to get put down.”

A person hilariously stated, “Brain surgery.”

Someone in frustration, wrote, “Dumb people like her are the reason that these animals sometimes have to be shot because idiots like her may have been killed by it.”

“Police are looking for this IDIOT who ignored all warnings and nearly got a tiger killed,” another added.

According to the zoo’s website, the Bengal tiger involved in the incident is one of two born in 2016. These tigers were later donated to the Cohanzick Zoo by a zoo in North Carolina.
