Amar Kaushik’s much-awaited sequel, Stree 2, has stormed the box office, setting a new benchmark for 2024 with an impressive opening day collection of Rs 54.35 crore in India. The film, which released on Independence Day, has not only exceeded expectations but also emerged as the biggest opener of the year.
Starring Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Aparshakti Khurana, Abhishek Banerjee, and Pankaj Tripathi, Stree 2 has carried forward the success of its 2018 predecessor. According to Sacnilk.com, the film earned Rs 8 crore during special opening premieres on Wednesday, followed by a massive Rs 46 crore on its official release day. This combined total of Rs 54.35 crore has set a new record, surpassing previous biggies like Kalki 2898 AD and Fighter.
The film’s success is even more remarkable considering that it faced stiff competition from Akshay Kumar and Taapsee Pannu’s Khel Khel Mein and John Abraham’s Vedaa on its opening day. Despite this, Stree 2 held its ground, thanks to the strong anticipation and positive word of mouth surrounding the film.
Directed by Amar Kaushik, Stree 2 sees Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor reprise their roles from the original. The film continues the story of Chanderi, now haunted by the terrifying Sarkata, with the townspeople once again turning to Stree for help. The advance bookings for Stree 2 were nothing short of phenomenal. The film sold 3,92,000 tickets on day one at national multiplexes, surpassing some of Bollywood’s biggest blockbusters. With an occupancy rate of 75.09 percent on its opening day, the film’s success is a testament to the enduring appeal of horror-comedies.
Stree 2 has not only become a crowd-pleaser but has also garnered critical acclaim. News18 Showsha rated the film 3.5/5, praising Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao for their standout performances. While Shraddha’s action-packed role was a highlight, the review noted that her character’s limited screen time was a bit disappointing.
