Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem broke the Olympic Record in Men’s Javelin throw with a massive 92.97m in the final of at Paris Olympics 2024 on Friday. Nadeem had made history as the first Pakistani to qualify for an Olympic final in athletics, achieving this feat at the 2020 Tokyo Games where he finished fifth.

Nadeem started off with a foul throw on his first attempt of the day but made amends with a monstrous throw on his second attempt as he broke the Olympic record mark.

Nadeem looked rather gingerly on his first attempt as he fluffed his steps during the run-up and had to go back to square one to repeat his procedure. Despite the correction in his run-up, he couldn’t register a legal throw.

However, the Pakistani more than made up for it with his second attempt which stunned the audience, as Nadeem seemed to have found his footing.

Indian Neeraj Chopra, who bagged the gold at the Tokyo Games, also started off with a red flag on his first attempt but registered a legal throw on his second attempt as he managed to clear a distance of 89.45m to climb up to second in the standings.

The 12 athletes, who made it to the final of the event by either breaching the automatic qualification mark of 84m or by finishing among the top 12 out of the 34 man pool in qualification, get three throws each in the final.

After the first three throws, the athletes will be ranked according to their best attempt and the four athletes at the bottom of the table will get eliminated, while the remaining athletes continue the drill with another three throws each.

At the end of the six throws, the top three athletes with the best attempts will finish on the Olympic podium.
