Super Deluxe, written and directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja, was released at the cinema halls on March 29, 2019, and attained positive reviews at the box office. Now, as per the reports, this film is all set to have a grand release again at the cinema halls on August 9 this year. Super Deluxe is an anthology of 4 stories starring Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Ramya Krishnan and others in important roles. Four writers including Thiagarajan, Mysskin, Nalan Kumarasamy and Neelan K Sekar wrote this film. Vijay Sethupathi won the National Film Award for Super Deluxe under the Best Supporting Actor category. Ramya Krishnan won the Ananda Vikatan Cinema Awards under the Best Supporting Actress category. Others also won awards for their respective performances.
Despite being a brilliant film, Super Deluxe couldn’t make it to India’s official entry for the Oscars in 2019. Vijay Sethupathi, who essayed the role of transgender Shilpa in this film, was disheartened with this development. In an interview with the media portal, Vijay Sethupathi said that was heartbreaking for them as well. He said that politics or some other issue happened. Vijay Sethupathi said that even if he was not in that film, he would have still wanted it to go to the Oscars. He added that something happened in between and he didn’t want to talk about it. “It’s unnecessary”, he concluded.
Fantasia International Film Festival
In 2019, Super Deluxe was selected to be screened at the prestigious Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, Canada. This festival is described as the most outstanding and the largest genre film festival in North America. The festival is cherished by the fans of genre films. Super Deluxe was screened at the Special Screening Section of the film fest. A press release by the film festival described the film as: “During a single day in Chennai, four destinies became forever entwined in this crazy, ambitious and deliberately overloaded slice of stylised contemporary Indian cinema, painting a cosmic fresco of absurd connections, coincidences and delicious digressions.”
