Kangana Ranaut supports Vinesh Phogat after her disqualification from the Paris 2024 Olympics due to being overweight.

Actress-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut has expressed her support for wrestler Vinesh Phogat following the latter’s disqualification from the Paris 2024 Olympics wrestling competition. Phogat, who was scheduled to compete in the women’s 50kg category, was found to be overweight on the morning of her gold medal bout on Thursday. In wrestling, bouts in each weight category are spread over two days, making the disqualification a significant blow to Phogat’s Olympic dreams.

Reacting to the news, Kangana Ranaut took to Instagram to call Phogat a “sherni” (lioness) and shared a photo of the wrestler on her Instagram Story. In another story, Kangana posted a heartfelt message that read, “Mat ro Vinesh, aapke saath khada hai poora desh,” which translates to “Don’t cry, Vinesh, the entire nation stands with you.” The post was accompanied by a poignant graphic illustrating the map of India comforting a heartbroken Vinesh, who is depicted sitting on a wrestling mat. The image symbolises the country’s support for the distraught athlete.

Earlier in the day, Kangana had celebrated Phogat’s dominant 5-0 victory over Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez. She praised Phogat’s performance and expressed optimism for India’s first gold medal at the Olympics. Kangana wrote, “Fingers crossed for India’s first Gold Medal… Vinesh Phogat at one point took part in protests where she raised the slogans of ‘Modi teri Kabr khudegi.’ Yet she was given the opportunity to represent the nation and receive the best training, coaches, and facilities. This is the beauty of democracy and the mark of a great leader.”

Phogat’s journey to the final was marked by exceptional performances. She began her path with a stunning victory over the world number one and defending champion, Yui Susaki of Japan, in the Round of 16. Susaki, who had been undefeated in international competition since the Tokyo 2020 Games, was defeated by Phogat. Phogat then progressed to the semifinals by narrowly defeating Ukraine’s Oksana Livach in the quarterfinals.

Despite her disqualification, Phogat’s efforts and achievements have garnered immense admiration and support from fans and celebrities alike.
