Proud of the way we’ve managed to turn things around: Tom Latham

New Zealand captain Tom Latham said his team did really well despite their four-run loss in the second T20 International against Bangladesh and a 2-0 loss in the five-match series at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Friday. .

The 29-year-old Latham, who was playing his first T20I match since November 2017, scored an unbeaten 65 off 49 balls as the tourists fell short of a target of 142 by five runs to finish on Friday at 137/5.

Despite the defeat, New Zealand can take heart from the fact that they had a much better performance in the second T20I after being bowled out for just 60 in the first match, which Bangladesh won by seven wickets with five overs to spare .

“Yeah obviously, it was a great game and [good] To take it to the last over considering how things went in the first game,” Latham was quoted as saying espncricinfo.

“For us, it is about trying to learn from what we did in that first game and I thought we did really well; Especially with the bat we were able to build a partnership and take it to the last over, which had excellent chances of winning. We probably weren’t that good with the ball today, but still I think we bowled really well at the top.

“Partnerships work a little differently. Obviously, my role was to try and bat through the innings and the others were able to try to be a little more explosive and that’s going to happen in T20 cricket – You are going to lose wickets. I thought the guys coming in did a really good job. Like I said, taking it till the last over and learning from what happened in the first T20… I am really proud of the guys The way we managed to turn things around,” said Latham, who is captaining the side in the absence of regular skipper Kane Williamson.

Rachin Ravindra admitted that at one point the team expected Latham to lead them on their way to victory.

“Obviously winning those close games is deplorable, but it shows the improvement we made between game one and game two and getting to the last ball. Apparently the credit goes to Tommy Latham. It was an incredible innings, it was wonderful to watch and he showed how to bat in these conditions and the leadership he showed was unbelievable.

“He was kind of in control, so we were all the same: ‘Okay, this could be here.’ It was incredible to watch – the way he was working solo and hitting boundaries and it seemed he really knew his options, which we can all take and learn from,” Ravindra said.
