England scored 423 for 8 on the second day of the third Test, thanks to a scintillating century by in-form captain Root (121) and a 139 for the third wicket with David Malan (70).

England’s total lead was 345 runs against the Indian team, which was rolled out for just 78 runs in the first innings. Craig Overton is unbeaten on 24, Robinson has not opened the account. This was Root’s third consecutive century in the current series against India. His total in Test cricket is 23rd and 8th century against India.

Malan’s comeback from fifties
Root appeared in an aggressive mood from the beginning and completed his fifty in just 57 balls. However, David Malan (70) lost his wicket on the final ball of the second session when the ball, in an attempt to flick the ball, took the edge of his bat and entered Pant’s glove. Playing his first Test in three years, this was Malan’s seventh fifty in Test cricket. He shared a 139-run partnership with Captain Root for the third wicket.

England started playing 120 runs without losing a wicket. There was a 135-run partnership for the first wicket between Burns and Haseeb Hameed. Shami bowled Rory Burns (61 runs) in the first hour of the game while bowling ’round the wicket’.

India got the second wicket by Ravindra Jadeja who bowled Hameed (68) in his very first over of the day.
