Rajasthan: 12 Dead, Several Injured as Heavy Rain Batters Tonk; Orange Alert Issued

At least a dozen people were killed and several others injured in separate incidents triggered by heavy rain and thunderstorm in Rajasthan’s Tonk district. Officials gave this information on Friday. Heavy rain accompanied by strong wind lashed several areas of the district on Thursday night, leading to loss of lives and damage to houses. A squall with a maximum speed of 96 kmph was reported at the Jaipur International Airport.

Meanwhile, the MeT on Friday issued an orange alert at several places in the state forecasting heavy rain and gusty wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph. Hail may also occur at some places.

Tonk District Collector Chinmayi Gopal said 12 people have died in Tonk district – three in Tonk city, three in Niwai block, two each in Malpura and Deoli and one each in Toda Rai Singh and Uniyara. Gopal said that the injured have been admitted to various hospitals in the district.

The District Collector said that water and electricity problems have been reported at some places, which the administration is making efforts to restore. The field staff active since night is trying to assess the total damage caused by rain and storm. He said that after the preparation of the report, compensation would be provided to the eligible persons as per the government rules. Disaster Management and Relief Secretary PC Kishan said the dead would be given relief from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).

According to the weather data recorded in the last 24 hours till 8.30 am on Friday, Jaipur tehsil recorded 6 cm of rain, while Malpura in Tonk, Laxmangarh in Sikar, Pilani in Jhunjhunu, Baunli in Sawai Madhopur, Hindaun in Karauli , 5-5 cm in Sambhar of Jaipur, Chaksu of Jaipur, Chomu of Jaipur and Sarwar of Ajmer. Several other places in the state received 1 to 4 cm of rain.

In view of the bad weather, the MeT on Friday issued an orange alert for northern parts of the state, including Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, Bikaner, Churu, Jhunjhunu, Sikar, Alwar, Nagaur, Jaipur, Dausa, Bharatpur, Dhaulpur, Karauli districts.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a weather bulletin, “Thunderstorm will continue in the districts of Bikaner, Jaipur, Bharatpur, Ajmer, Kota divisions on May 27 as well.”

From May 28, another new Western Disturbance will become active and the storm will intensify again. There is a strong possibility of strong storm, strong wind speed of 50 to 70 kmph, heavy rain and lightning and hailstorm at a few places.
