Google Play users will start seeing changes to their app’s store listing in early 2024.
Google has introduced a new “Data Deletion Policy” that aims to empower users with greater clarity and control over their in-app data, requiring Android apps to allow users to delete their accounts in the app and on the web. Permission is required.
“For applications that enable in-app account creation, developers will soon be required to provide the option to delete accounts and data from within the app and online,” Google said in a blogpost.
According to the company, the move is aimed at “better educating” users about their data controls and boosting trust in both the app and the Play Store in general.
Additionally, developers can provide users with more options – users, who do not wish to delete their entire account, can choose to delete only certain data (such as activity history, pictures or videos).
In cases where developers have a legitimate reason to retain certain data, such as security, fraud prevention or regulatory compliance, they should clearly disclose those practices, the company said.
The policy is being implemented in phases.
The tech giant mentioned that creators have until December 7 to respond to questions about data deletion in their app’s security form.
Google Play users will start seeing changes to their app’s store listing in early 2024.
Developers who need more time to comply with the new policy can file for an extension in the Play Console till May 31, 2024.
