New Delhi: The uncle and driver of radical preacher and pro-Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh have surrendered before the police in Jalandhar, a senior police officer said on Monday (March 20, 2023). Jalandhar’s Senior Superintendent of Police (Rural) Swarnadeep Singh said that Amritpal’s uncle Harjit Singh and driver Harpreet Singh surrendered late on Sunday night near a gurudwara in Mehatpur area. He said that the Khalistan supporter is still absconding.
The Punjab government on Saturday launched a major crackdown against Amritpal and his group ‘Waris Punjab De’, with the police arresting 78 members of the outfit that day. However, the preacher somehow escaped their trap after his convoy was intercepted in Jalandhar district.

The action against the ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief comes weeks after Amritpal and his supporters stormed the Ajnala police station near Amritsar, assuring that an arrested person would be released.
Pro-Khalistan leaders and their supporters They have been charged with promoting disharmony, attempt to murder, assault on police personnel and obstructing public servants in the discharge of their duties. Six policemen including a superintendent of police were injured in Ajnala.

Meanwhile, the Bhagwant Mann government on Sunday extended suspension of mobile internet and SMS services in Punjab till Monday afternoon.
The official order, which exempted banking services, said it was to “prevent any incitement to violence and any disturbance of the peace and public order”.
