Srinagar: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday raided several places, including the residences of Hurriyat leader Qazi Yasir and Jammu and Kashmir Salvation Movement President Zafar Bhat, in connection with the allotment of MBBS seats in Pakistan. Officials said the raids are being conducted in various colleges in Pakistan in connection with allotment of MBBS seats to residents of Jammu and Kashmir and other professional admissions.

An FIR was lodged against the accused on July 27, 2020 for allegedly joining hands with some educational consultants to arrange admission of J&K residents to MBBS and other professional courses in various colleges and e-universities in Pakistan .

Investigating agencies found during investigation that huge amount of money was received from the parents of the students in lieu of such admission and the money earned was allegedly used in supporting terrorism in J&K.

On 18 August 2021, the Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) wing of the Jammu and Kashmir Police arrested six people, including separatist leader Zafar Akbar Bhat and a woman from North Kashmir’s Baramulla, in a case registered in July last year in connection with an alleged racket of selling to Pakistan. Arrested him. Based on MBBS seats and other professional courses by Hurriyat leaders and using part of the money generated for militancy.

The police had then said that over 80 cases related to seats were studied in the academic years between 2014-18 in which either students or their parents were probed. Besides this, searches were carried out at about a dozen premises in the Valley to find evidence of collection of funds and its further use.

“Analysis of digital records and paper receipts as well as records relating to bank transactions revealed that a substantial portion of the money collected was set aside for personal use. Evidence also came on record to show that the money was was channeled into various channels which ended up supporting programs and projects related to terrorism and separatism.

The police also said that the investigation at that time revealed that on an average a seat costs between 10 to 12 lakhs. “In some cases, the price was reduced on the recommendation of those leaders.”

“Based on the available evidence, a conservative estimate indicated that the money involved could be around Rs 4 crore per annum, based on the fact that the allocation of seats for disbursement by those leaders individually is about the same as for the MBBS programme. There were 40 seats.Each year.
