The ‘Atal Progressway’ or Chambal Expressway, a four-lane 404-km greenfield highway, will pass through the Gwalior-Chambal region of Madhya Pradesh, connecting Rajasthan’s Kota to Uttar Pradesh’s Etawah. The lion’s share of the 404 km-long expressway, about 310 km, will pass through Madhya Pradesh. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has now invited bids to build the expressway in various packages across almost the entire stretch of MP state.

The Gwalior-Chambal region made a stellar contribution to the formation of the Congress government in 2018 under the leadership of Kamal Nath. The Congress had never before won more than 18-20 seats in the region, but it had won 26 of the 34 seats in the previous elections. seats here. Jyotiraditya Scindia, the leader of the region, later joined the BJP and toppled the Kamal Nath government in MP.

Over the past two years, MPs from Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Scindia and Gwalior, and Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar have pushed for the project along with Roads and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. In addition to this expressway, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will also pass through Madhya Pradesh for about 200 km and will criss-cross the Chambal Expressway. The Madhya Pradesh section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is almost complete.

The Chambal region is remote and said to be the most underdeveloped region of the country, once known for dacoits and rampant lawlessness. Madhya Pradesh government believes that this will also help the industrial department of Chambal region.

The Center had earlier said that this high-speed road corridor would contribute to the development of areas located near it with the setting up of logistics parks, industrial units, agricultural production centers and food processing facilities.
