Apart from certain cabin crew members, the age of opting for VRS has been relaxed from 40 for certain grades of clerks and unskilled employees as well. In the last two years, even under government ownership, AI had introduced VRS for some of its employees.
Unions are questioning the move on the grounds that AI’s new owners will have to retain employees for a certain amount of time as per the terms of the sale. Whether implementing the voluntary scheme violates it remains to be seen.
Declaring Tata the winner for the AI bid last October, aviation secretary and AI’s last CMD Rajiv Bansal had said: “AI has 12,085 employees (8,084 permanent and 4,001 contractual). AI Express has 1,534 employees. All of them have to be maintained for a year. In the second year, if someone has to be removed / truncated, then VRS will have to be given.
About 5,000 AI employees were due to retire in the next five years, that is, 1,000 annually. Sources had said that day that VRS would be only for permanent employees and not contractual – a problem for AI Express where everyone except pilots is on contract.
