Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berrettini on Sunday announced his withdrawal from the Tokyo Olympics due to a thigh injury at the grass-court tournament.
The 25-year-old Italian said on Instagram that she had an MRI scan the day before and “was informed that I would not be able to compete for a few weeks.”
Berrettini lost to Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. He scored the winning runs in 11 matches to reach his first Grand Slam final.
“It is my greatest honor to represent Italy so it is devastating to miss the Olympics,” Berrettini wrote. “I wish the whole Italian team all the best in Tokyo. I will support you in every way possible.”
