A former Rajya Sabha MP has approached the Supreme Court seeking action against Haryana’s DGP and Chief Secretary over the ‘Namaz’ controversy here.

The move has drawn sharp reactions from a right-wing organisation, which accused him of “instigating” people and warned against open prayers on Friday. The petition has been filed by Mohammad Adeeb, a resident of Gurugram.

He accused the state chief secretary and the DGP of failing to comply with the court’s directions with regard to measures to curb communal and violent feelings, which result in hate crimes. The petition has sought action against Chief Secretary Sanjeev Kaushal, DGP PK Agarwal and others.

“The communal fabric of the state has broken down and they have allowed this to happen despite several court orders,” Adeeb said.

“These incidents are trying to create an atmosphere of hatred and prejudice against a community at the behest of identifiable goons and sadly we see that there is serious inaction on the part of the state machinery,” he said.

The organization also issued a warning against “namaz” in the open on Friday. Committee chairman Mahavir Bhardwaj said that till an amicable solution is not found, prayers should be offered only in mosques and homes.

“We are not attacking religion but ‘land jihad’ where some elements are trying to take over public land,” he said. Both the Commissioner of Police and the Deputy Commissioner declined to comment on the issue.
