Australia’s fast bowlers led by Pat Cummins captured the show on the first day of Ashes 2021-22. The trio of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Cummins ran through England’s looking nervous batting line-up, bundled them out for 147 in the first two sessions.
Coming to bat first on a rainy day, England had a poor start. Rory Burns was dismissed for a duck by Mitchell Starc on the very first ball as the visitors were dealt a big blow. It was the beginning of England’s downfall as they were reduced to 11 for 3 in no time.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler showed some flexibility and shared a 52-run stand with Olly Pope for the sixth wicket in the post-lunch session. However, the Aussies soon made a comeback with Pat Cummins taking five wickets. Starc and Hazlewood took two wickets each, while Cameron Green got his maiden Test scalp.
People on social media praised the Australian captain for wreaking havoc at the Gabba – the place where he lost a Test after 30 years, earlier in January. Here are some reactions:
Great start for Australia and the captain @patcummins30 With your 5 FA. England are still in the game if they can knock Australia for less than 285. Lots of pitch. I want Starc to get the amazing Ashes solely for the work he did behind the scenes with the women’s team during his last international assignments. #better together #AshesPs Headband?!— Shikha Pandey (@shikhashauny) December 8, 2021
Day 1 in the first test – Carey’s first test and catch. Starc’s wicket on the first ball. Green took his first Test wicket. Cummins with the first 5fa vs England. (Not the first of Hazlewood, but 2 great snares as well). #Ashes https://t.co/Xp2IqaVBPC— mel jones (@meljones_33) December 8, 2021
