8 November 2021. Children’s ward on the third floor of Kamala Nehru Hospital. Monday night at 8:30. Remembering this night, the two staff nurses posted there shiver. Both of them have seen that terrible scene of fire with their eyes. One of them is Babita Panwar and the other is Rajesh Raja. Rajesh Raja was a short distance away. Babita was present in the ward. Four children died in the night. At the same time, till Tuesday evening, the cry of 10 innocent children became silent on the second day. Do you know what happened that night?
The fire broke out as soon as I turned on the ventilator: Babita Panwar
On November 8th, I had night duty in my SNCU ward. It was 8:30 pm. About 20 children were admitted to the ward. Here a child came in a serious condition. He needed a ventilator. I was wearing a hat to the child. Ward boy brought ventilator. As soon as the doctor turned on the ventilator, it caught fire. It felt like it would just explode. I immediately took the child away.
The doctor present there tried to douse the fire with a fire extinguisher. Suddenly smoke started spreading. We started crying. I could not understand what to do. Children’s lives were dearer. Nothing was visible. When the window was broken, a little smoke came out. The lives of the children were more important than themselves, as soon as the children were picked up and shifted to the PICU. Everyone came. Attender and doctor also came.
After the accident, the repair work has started in SNCU.
I was a little far away, started shifting children very often: Rajesh Raja Bundela
I also had night duty in SNCU ward. Suddenly the ventilator exploded. There was chaos. Then we started taking out the kids. I didn’t know what to do and what not. There was so much smoke that nothing was visible. Hearing the noise, other attendants and staff members came. Everyone tried to put out the fire, but the children were first pulled out. I myself shifted about 8 to 10 children to the PICU. It became dark. Smoke filled the ward. Broke the window for oxygen. When did I faint while saving the children? Did not realize.
Went inside after breaking glass, still having chest pain: Mohammad Mojib Khan
My nephew was admitted in SNCU two days back. Now he is in the 5th floor ward. Me and my brother-in-law Mohammad Amir were on the 5th floor. We were going down. Suddenly people started running. When we inquired, we were told that there was a fire on the third floor. We knew it was a children’s ward. We immediately ran towards him. There was smoke everywhere. Then I broke the glass in the window with the cylinder, so that the smoke could come out. Breaking the glass and entering.
Tears were flowing. Both me and my brother-in-law started trying to save the children. Tried to douse the fire with the fire extinguishers present there, but they were not working. The fire was strong. We also somehow got the children out with the help of the staff. The sour burps are still coming. There is pain in chest also. It is said that the staff had run away. Nothing like that the staff was stubborn and they helped the people.
