India’s KL Rahul, left, and India’s Rohit Sharma celebrate the runs scored during the Cricket Twenty20 World Cup match between India and Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, Wednesday, November 3, 2021.

After India’s massive 66-run win over Afghanistan, which dashed India’s slim hopes of reaching the semi-finals, the vice-captain Rohit Sharma Said that it was important to score big on the board and win by a big margin in the T20 World Cup Super 12 match on Wednesday.

Sharma himself scored 74 runs in 47 balls in the opening stand of 140 runs. KL Rahul (69 off 48) before Rishabh Pant (27* off 13) and Hardik Pandya (35* for 13) took India to 210/2 by the end of 20 overs. Afghanistan could only return 144/7.

“It was important to get a respectable total, and NRR could have come into the game so we had to win by a good margin, so glad we got it. Got off to a good start today, and it’s not my natural game – I I usually like to go in. So I tried to settle in, play cricket shots and score a big score,” said Rohit.

Speaking about his batting approach, Sharma said that he wanted to get off to a good start and also wanted to set the stage for big scores, praising Rahul as well.

“The idea was to go after it and get off to a good start, which didn’t happen in the first two games and set the stage for the others. Rahul’s exceptional batting and that partnership was crucial,” he said.
