Police officer Abdul Majeed told Reuters over the phone that police were searching for Manzoor Hussain after setting ablaze a house shared by Fauzia Bibi and Khurshid Mai in a village in central Pakistan’s Muzaffargarh district.

Majeed said that Mai’s husband also died in the fire.

According to the official, Bibi had married Mehboob Ahmed about 18 months ago in an alleged love marriage against her father’s wishes.

Majeed said, ‘The incident is the result of a rivalry between the two families over love marriage.

He told that the father who is being searched lives in a nearby village.

According to his statement to the authorities, Bibi’s husband Ahmed told the police that he was not at home when the fire broke out and that the house was on fire when he returned from work in the morning.

Ahmed said that his 4-month-old son had died along with Mai’s three children aged 2, 6 and 13.

According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, every year hundreds of women in Pakistan are killed by their relatives for marrying without their consent or against the wishes of their families.
