A 21-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her in-laws in Bihar’s Nawada on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday for not fulfilling dowry demands.
According to the Bihar Police, the woman’s parents have lodged a complaint with the Kashichak police station that their daughter was murdered by her in-laws for dowry.
“We have registered an FIR against the woman’s husband, her brother and her in-laws, including her parents, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Dowry Act,” said a senior officer from the Kashichak police station.
“The parents of the victim have mentioned in their complaint that they had got their daughter Shivani married to Keshav Kumar of Subhanpur village about 18 months back. For the past few months her daughter-in-law’s in-laws used to call her parents and demand dowry,” said the official.
The officer further said that the victim’s parents told the police that several times the victim had called them to inform them about the mental and physical torture they were facing due to non-fulfillment of dowry demands.
“The victim’s father has mentioned in his complaint that Shivani’s in-laws had been demanding a four-wheeler for the past few weeks and wanted it at his residence on the occasion of Vishwakarma Puja,” the officer said.
The officer further said that the day Shivani’s body was found hanging from her room, her in-laws told the police that she had committed suicide. “Soon after Shivani’s parents lodged a complaint against her, the victim’s husband and in-laws fled,” the officer said.
The victim’s father while talking to the media said, ‘My daughter called me and said that her husband and in-laws are harassing her. For the past few weeks, Shivani’s in-laws were calling me repeatedly asking for a four-wheeler. He also warned me of dire consequences when I told him that I would not be able to fulfill his demands.
The last rites of the deceased woman were performed late Wednesday night in the presence of senior police officials.
