An overnight fire engulfed a mobile home in King’s Mobile Home Park on the north side of Des Moines.

The flames started before 2.30 am on Wednesday.

A mobile home was destroyed, but everyone was able to survive it because of one hero.

That hero is 9 year old Juan Gomez.

“I felt like the house was about to go down immediately,” said Juan.

Juan woke up in the middle of the night and noticed a strange smell in the house.

“I thought it was popcorn, but it was so strong so I checked,” Juan said.

As he checked the strange smell, flames began to burn, so he ran to his mother’s room to wake him.

Juan Gomez’s mother, Ana Dominguez, said, “I closed my door. He entered my room and said mom is on fire.”

By the time Juan alerted his mother, the flames were rising.

The family scrambled to get out safely, but flames were already closing the front door and parts of the roof were beginning to collapse.

Then the 9-year-old boy took the initiative to console his younger sisters.

Juan said, “She got scared and started crying. I told Cecilia it would be okay.”

They were fine. All five of them and their two dogs made it out alive because Juan acted quickly.

“If I had stayed there five more seconds, I think we would have, yeah, basically fried,” Dominguez said.

Dominguez is saddened to think what could have happened if it weren’t for her brave son, but this proud mother is grateful for her son and what he did.

“I thank God for that baby at the time as we were sleeping,” Dominguez said. “He’s the reason we’re probably alive.”

Juan said that he knew his quick actions saved his family and that he was grateful that they would have more time together.

“I don’t know how to say it,” Gomez said. “I’m really glad I saved them and I can still make memories with my family.”

Family and friends have donated new shoes, winter coats, backpacks and more to the family.
