Chennai: Fresh COVID-19 case in Tamil Nadu It fell marginally to 740 on Saturday, from 746 on Friday. The death toll rose to 36,454 with 11 deaths, while 8,382 patients were still seeking treatment for the viral infection.
“More than 85% of the people who have tested positive in Tamil Nadu have the delta variant. We have not seen omicron in the state so far, but we are monitoring the cases,” said health secretary Ma Subramaniam after inspecting the screening facilities at the international airport. “People can cut down on transmission by wearing masks. The adherence to masks has come down significantly,” he said. He said the cases in Tamil Nadu remained around 700 as there are new clusters from workplaces and educational institutions in the state.
Coimbatore (112) and Chennai (105) reported the highest number of new cases, while 24 districts reported single digits. One new case each was reported in five districts – Ariyalur, Perambalur, Ramanathapuram, Ranipet and Tenkasi. Fifteen districts recorded an increase in cases compared to their Friday. The sharpest increase was reported from Vellore with 17 cases up from 12 on Friday. Other districts reported one to four more cases than their Friday.
Of the 11 deaths on Saturday, two were in Vellore and one each in nine districts. Twenty-eight districts reported zero deaths. “We also urge people to take the vaccine. This is an effective way to prevent hospitalization and deaths,” Subramaniam said.
At least 2.3 lakh people took the vaccine on Saturday. The number of doses in government centers increased to 66 million.
