76 SC lawyers write to CJI for ‘ethnic cleansing’ at events in Delhi, Haridwar

New Delhi: 76 Supreme Court lawyers have written to Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, seeking suo motu cognizance of the apex court’s call for “ethnic cleansing” at two recent religious events in Delhi and Haridwar.

The letter quoted by NDTV said, “The above incidents and the speeches made during them are not mere hate speech, but an open call for the killing of an entire community.”

It said the speeches “not only pose a grave threat to the unity and integrity of our country but also endanger the lives of millions of Muslim citizens”.

“It may be noted that no effective steps have been taken under the provisions of 153, 153A, 153B, 295A, 504, 506, 120B, 34 of the IPC in respect of earlier hate speeches. Thus, urgent judicial intervention is required to prevent such incidents, which seem to have become the order of the day,” read the letter sent to Chief Justice Ramana, reported NDTV.
