70 kg heroin worth over Rs 350 crore seized again near Mundra port

Ahmedabad: Gujarat’s Anti-Terrorism Squad has seized around 70 kg of heroin, worth Rs 350 crore, from a container near Mundra port in Kutch district. An official gave this information on Tuesday. He said that since the search operation is still on, the quantity and price of the seized material may increase.

Based on a specific tip, the ATS searched a shipping container that had arrived from another country sometime back and was kept at a container freight station outside the port.

The ATS found around 70 kg of heroin hidden in the cargo, the official said.

Various state and central agencies including ATS and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) have seized drugs worth crores of rupees from shipping containers arriving at Gujarat ports from other countries in recent days.

DRI seizes around 3,000 kg of heroin from Mundra port in 2021

The DRI had in September last year seized around 3,000 kg of heroin from two containers at the Mundra port, which is believed to have originated in Afghanistan and was worth around Rs 21,000 crore in global markets.

In May this year, the DRI seized 56 kg of cocaine, valued at around Rs 500 crore, from a container near Mundra port. In April, the DRI seized 205.6 kg of heroin worth Rs 1,439 crore from a container near Kandla port in Kutch.

Around the same period, Gujarat ATS and DRI in a joint operation recovered around 90 kg heroin worth Rs 450 crore from a shipping container that had arrived from Iran at Pipavav port in Amreli district.
