70 died due to poisonous liquor. Was there no cure? Why couldn’t they be saved? Did they drink poison in the name of alcohol?

Before answering all these in sequence The full story of the death of Krunal Singh, the first patient to reach the hospital-

Krunal Singh is 38 years old. Drunk while returning from work at 5 pm on 12th December. As soon as I reached home, I started feeling restless. Stomach burning as well. As soon as the wife came to know that she had drunk alcohol, she gave salt solution to induce vomiting. But there was no vomiting. Gave some medicines kept at home, but to no avail. The whole day of 13th December and till the evening of 14th December, he continued to do domestic treatment. When Krunal started fainting, the wife’s worry increased. She reached Mashrakh Community Health Center at 5 pm. Doctors said – oxygen saturation has reduced. BP is too high. He was given saline. After half an hour, Krunal was out of breath.

On 14 and 15 December, an average of 4 patients were reaching the Community Health Center Mashrakh with such villagers every hour.

The dead had consumed alcohol on the night of 12 December. The first death occurs after 48 hours. Most of the 70 who died would have been alive if they had been taken to the hospital immediately. The most important 12 hours of the beginning were wasted by the family members. Reason- Fear of police… 2 thousand to 5 thousand rupees fine will have to be paid. FIR can also be registered.

Just because of the fear of this fine and FIR, someone’s father and someone’s wife or son kept on doing home remedies. Some were made to vomit after drinking salt solution and some were given soap solution. When his health worsened, the wanderers around the village reached to the doctor. 24 hours passed while doing this. When the vision started to stop and the breath started to swell, then panicked. Irrespective of fine and punishment, he took the patient to the government hospital.

By the time Mashrakh reached the Community Health Center, 24 to 48 hours had passed. Most of them were in serious condition. The doctors raised their hands and said to take Chhapra to Sadar Hospital. Chhapra is 35 km away from here. The breath of the patients started coming up. Most died in this 35 km journey.

What is the liquor prohibition law… due to which so many deaths occurred due to fear

The Bihar government amended the prohibition law in March this year. Made provisions for some relief for those who drink alcohol. A fine ranging from Rs 2000 to Rs 5000 was imposed on first-time drinkers. If caught drinking alcohol for the second time, he will be sent to jail, in which the punishment can be up to one year. Police files FIR in cases of liquor.

Officers also say that information is taken from such patients as to where the alcohol was consumed and how its network operates. Police investigation also starts with those who drink alcohol. Because of this people are afraid.

Most of those who have died are daily wage workers. It must not have been easy for them to pay a fine of Rs 2 or Rs 5 thousand. Had it been there, he might have drank branded liquor. People have seen the inhuman behavior of the police during the liquor case, that’s why they were in fear.

Former Bihar DGP Abhayanand says- People are afraid of the prohibition law. People did not go to the hospital for fear of police action. Had the police come forward and provided treatment with legal action, there would not have been so many deaths.

Everyone drank alcohol on 12 and 13 December. Most of them had lost their eyesight earlier.

This is how poisonous alcohol spoils the body
Denatured alcohol produces a lot of gas. Patients also start having problems in breathing along with abdominal pain. Sugar level also increases rapidly. Medicines are given to control sugar and BP. Toxins have a big effect on oxygen levels. Oxygen is given in case of difficulty in breathing.

How is the treatment of those who drink poisonous alcohol
First an attempt is made to make the patients vomit. The effect of toxin is reduced by giving medicines for blood pressure and gas. The dosage of medicines increases according to the amount of toxin present in the body. Saline is offered so that there is no shortage of water in the body. Monitoring blood pressure with oxygen and sugar. Oxygen is given when needed.

If there is an effect of heart and liver along with kidney, then prescribed medicines are given for this. Let’s proceed with the systematic treatment. The organ of the body in which there is a problem is treated. Dr. Gopal Krishna, in-charge of Chhapra’s Mashrakh Community Health Center, says – If the quantity is high then the first 4 hours are very important for the patients. It takes 10 to 12 hours for the toxin to spread in the body. The patient is made to vomit, so that the toxin can be removed before it spreads in the blood.

first liver then heart damage
According to the doctors who treat the patients of poisonous alcohol, the effect of alcohol toxin is first on the liver and brain. Metabolism (digestive system) deteriorates due to methanol. Due to this, the sugar increases rapidly. Patients’ sugar crosses 300-400. Rapid fluctuations in BP. Oxygen saturation starts falling. Formic acid is formed from formaldehyde. This leads to loss of vision due to optic neuritis. Second, the blood also becomes thick, due to which the heart gets choked. Kidney also stops working. Cardiac arrest occurs. In such condition it is difficult to save the patient.

The doctor who did the post-mortem said – the liver of most of them became white
Cases of deaths due to toxin have come to light in Chhapra’s post-mortem. Doctor Santosh Kumar, who did the post-mortem, says – If the patients had not delayed the treatment, there would not have been so many deaths. Most of them had increased formic acid. Because of this, multi-organs have failed. Lungs and heart failed. The size of the liver had increased and it had turned white.

What is poisonous alcohol?
Physician Dr. Rana SP Singh said – To increase intoxication, the quantity of spirit (methanol) is increased. Along with that, they also put intoxicating pills. Due to excessive spirit, alcohol becomes poisonous. The same has happened in the case of Saran. The amount of methanol in the wine must have been more than 15 ml. In liquor factories, the combination is done at every level according to the prescribed standard. Testing is done in the lab, so different.

Methanol is easily available in the market: It is mostly used in making paint, plastic goods. It is also used in polish. The color of the spirit supplied in hospitals and markets is kept blue, so that adulteration does not happen.
