The information about the vacant posts was shared by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha (Twitter).
As per the Act and statutes governing these institutions, the directors of these institutions are the principal academic and executive officers.
The post of chairperson is lying vacant in seven Indian institutes. technology (IITs) and 22 National Institutes of Technology (NITs), according to the Ministry of Education.
The post of chairperson is an honorary post in IITs and NITs. The President presides over the Board of Governors (BOG) of the respective institutions. As per the Act and Statutes governing these institutions, the directors of these institutions are the principal academic and executive officers.

“The charge of the post of Chairman, BoGs in 7 IITs has been delegated to the Chairman of BoGs of other IITs with due approval of the Visitor of the Institute. Similarly, in 22 NITs, the post of Chairperson, BoG is vacant and as per the statutory provisions, the Director of the NIT presides over the BoG of the institute till a new nomination is made.
As far as vacancies on other posts of BoG are concerned, 11 IITs have vacancies for members from various fields. Thirty NITs have vacancies of two BoG Council nominees in their Boards and 14 NITs have pending nominations to their Boards from the respective State Governments.
“The vacant posts are to be filled(up) by the concerned designated authorities as per the provisions of the Act and statutes governing these institutions. Filling up of vacancies with suitable eminent persons is a continuous process. Nominations are already being actively considered for the vacant posts that come under the purview of the ministry, Pradhan said.
