July 6, 2019: Rohit Sharma became the first batsman to score 5 centuries in a single World Cup by scoring 103 runs in 94 balls in India’s final league match against Sri Lanka.

India’s limited overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma entered the record books on July 6, 2019, when he became the first player to score 5 centuries in a single edition of the World Cup, Rohit created history when he made his debut in the World Cup. Scored 5th century in his last group game in the Cup 2019 and 27th in his ODI career during India’s emphatic 7-wicket win over Sri Lanka at Leeds.

Sharma surpassed Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara’s record for most centuries in an edition of the mega event. Sangakkara had hit four centuries in the 2015 edition of the prestigious quadrennial event. Rohit created history by scoring his 27th century in One Day Internationals.

This was Rohit Sharma’s third consecutive century and sixth in his World Cup career, which is the joint-highest number with Sachin Tendulkar. During his innings, Rohit Sharma became the second Indian batsman after Tendulkar to score 600 runs in the same World Cup.

After scoring 648 runs, Rohit Sharma was the highest run-scorer in the 2019 World Cup. Apart from Sri Lanka, Rohit had scored centuries against South Africa, Pakistan, England and Bangladesh.

Rohit set up a difficult chase for India with an unbeaten 122 against South Africa before scoring a solid 57 against Australia. Rohit then scored a brilliant 140 against arch-rivals Pakistan before being dropped against Afghanistan and West Indies. He then scored 102 against England and 104 against Bangladesh.

Rohit failed to repeat his league form in the semi-final against New Zealand with just 1 run, but his tally of 648 in a single edition of the World Cup is the third highest after Sachin Tendulkar (673 – 2003 World Cup) and Matthew Hayden. 659) at the 2007 World Cup.
