6 Bollywood comedies that had a unique take on weddings

The upcoming wedding comedy 14 Phere starring Vikrant Massey and Kriti Kharbanda is releasing on 23rd July on OTT platform ZEE5. The film tells the story of a young couple who belong to different communities and so they trick their respective families into marrying each other. A situational comedy, 14 Phere revolves around the crazy events that surround two weddings. In anticipation of the film, let’s take a look at another Bollywood Movies that had a unique take on weddings.

The Bollywood horror-comedy Roohi saw a woman in possession of a witch who she wishes to marry. We see the other characters around Ruhi try different ways to save her, including marrying a man without her wish. However, the twist comes when Roohi decides to be her own savior and marries herself. Directed by Hardik Mehta, Roohi stars Janhvi Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao and Varun Sharma in lead roles.

Dolly Ki Doli

Dolly Ki Doli directed by Abhishek Dogra is a wedding comedy in which a thief-woman marries several times. We see a group of con artists pretending to be a family, as they betray the unsuspecting groom. Dolly’s modus operandi is that she puts sleeping pills in the food of her groom and his family and steals everything from them. When a relentless groom arrives with a cop, Dolly and her ‘family’ find themselves at the end of their rope. Pulkit Samrat, Rajkummar Rao and Varun Sharma are in important roles along with Sonam Kapoor in the film.

Happy Bhag Jayegi

In this 2016 film, Harpreet or Happy Kaur is a runaway bride who creates a ruckus with her antics in both India and Pakistan. She plans to run away with her lover, but accidentally reaches Lahore in a lorry. There she blackmails a couple to help her. Happy Bhag Jayegi, with its ensemble cast was quite popular upon its release and its sequel was also made in 2018. Directed by Mudassar Aziz, Happy Bhag Jayegi stars Diana Penty, Abhay Deol, Ali Fazal and Jimmy Shergill.

Pure city Romance

Shuddh Desi Romance, written by Maneesh Sharma, was well ahead of its time as it preached that marriage was not necessary to have a fulfilling relationship. Shuddh Desi Romance starring Sushant Singh Rajput, Parineeti Chopra and Vaani Kapoor is the story of two lovers who run away from their weddings for fear of marriage.

Laxman Utekar’s Luka Chuppi is another film that talks about live-in relationships. However, unlike Shuddh Desi Romance, the protagonist is portrayed as a desperate marriage. A young couple, played by Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon, live together, lying that they are married. However, when their family finds out, they accept their “marriage”.

Tanu Weds Manu Returns

Directed by Aanand L Rai, Tanu Weds Manu Returns is the sequel to the hit 2011 film starring Kangana Ranaut and Madhavan. In the first film we witness funny incidents to see two polar opposite people Tanu and Manu together. The second film takes place a few years after their marriage. When their marriage breaks down, Manu becomes attracted to another woman who looks like his ex. Things get complicated for him when Tanu enters his marriage. The film also stars Jimmy Shergill, Deepak Dobriyal, Swara Bhaskar and Mohammad Zeeshan Ayub in pivotal roles.
