6 Assam Police personnel martyred, 50 injured as violence intensifies along Mizoram border

At least six Assam Police personnel were killed in firing by miscreants from neighboring Mizoram on Monday as violence escalated along the inter-state border in Cachar district, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. At least 50 personnel, including Cachar Superintendent of Police Nimbalkar Vaibhav Chandrakant, were injured in the firing and stone pelting, a senior Assam Police official, who was present in the forest amid continuous cross-border firing, said.

Sarma tweeted, “I am deeply saddened to inform that six brave jawans of @assampolice have sacrificed their lives while protecting the constitutional boundary of our state on the Assam-Mizoram border. To the bereaved families. My heartfelt condolences to you.”

The senior police officer said that the miscreants suddenly started firing from across the border when civil officials from both the sides were holding talks to resolve the differences.

“I cannot immediately say how many people have been injured, but I estimate at least 50 personnel. Our SP was also injured in the firing and one bullet hit his leg,” the officer said over phone.

The IPS officer spoke to PTI when he was hiding inside a forest and firing could be heard in the background.

“I am still sitting at the foothills with the team. We were engaged in talks with the Kolasib SP of Mizoram Mr. Ralte and his additional SP. IGP, DC, SP of Assam Police were all there and talked to find a solution to the problem. Was doing.

“We did not let our people go there, but their men were continuously throwing stones. Many were injured. They were hitting us with slingshots. We were talking, suddenly they opened fire from the top of the hill. They We opened fire while aiming. When we were meeting,” he said.

The Assam Police team somehow managed to handle the situation and started retaliatory firing, the official said.

Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) principal Babul Bezbaruah told PTI that at least 50 policemen have been admitted after being shot.

“There is a constant flow of injured personnel. As we are talking, another vehicle entered the hospital with a few more injured persons. All of them have been shot and shot. We have called all the doctors and treated the injured. Separate teams have been formed for this,” he said.

A senior doctor, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the Cachar SP is in critical condition and a bullet has hit his thigh, besides he has suffered a stomach injury.

“He lost his blood and we put one unit of blood in him. I think more blood will be needed,” he said.
