Dhaka: Captain Tom Latham And find allen Hit attacking knocks registered a 27-run consolation win for New Zealand in the fifth Twenty20 International against Bangladesh on Friday.
Latham’s unbeaten 50 and Allen’s 41 off 24 balls took New Zealand to 161 for five after electing to bat first in Dhaka.
The Kiwi bowlers defeated Bangladesh 134-8 in 20 overs but the hosts won the five-match series 3-2.
Left-arm spinner Ejaz Patel and pacer Scott Kuggeleijn took two wickets each as Bangladesh missed an unbeaten 49 while chasing their target. Afif Hussain.
Man of the match, Latham said after the win, “It’s great to finish this phase of the tour on a high level.”
“The way we were able to put it all together was (pleasing). We put in close to a perfect performance, learned all from the previous games.”
Latham, a left-arm wicketkeeper-batsman, stood out with his second half-century of the series after Allen’s blitz to attack the opposition bowlers.
Bangladesh were in trouble 46-4 before Hussain and the captain Mahmudullah: Riyadh put on 63 runs for the fifth wicket to boost Bangladesh’s hopes of chasing 162 runs.
Kuggeleijn broke the stand with the wicket of Mahmudullah and Patel flattened Bangladesh’s batting by lbw Nurul Hasan for four.
Kuggeleijn finished with 2-23, while Patel returned figures of 2-21 in his four overs.
“Would have loved to have won today but I think New Zealand batted really well, we didn’t chase well but were happy to win the series,” Mahmudullah praised the opposition.
Bangladesh came into the game, knowing the series was already in the bag, thanks to their six-wicket haul in the fourth match on Wednesday.
Allen and Rachin Ravindra scored 58 runs in the opening stand before Bangladesh found some success with the ball.
Allen was particularly aggressive, hitting four fours and three sixes.
Shorful Islam, who bore the brunt of the attack, gave Bangladesh their first breakthrough by dismissing Ravindra for 17.
Allen was given leg before the next ball, but the decision had to be overturned on review as replays indicated the ball had pitched outside leg-stump.
However, Shorful had the last laugh as he bowled Allen off the next ball to stop New Zealand’s run flow.
Latham again took New Zealand in control with his brilliant batting and was helped by Henry Nicholls (20) and Cole McConchie (17 not out).
Shoreful finished with 2-48 for Bangladesh.
Left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed was named player of the series for his eight wickets along with Latham, who topped the batting charts with 159 runs.
