5 lakh deaths increased in 2020: UP has the highest number of deaths, Maharashtra has the highest number of newborn deaths

In the country in January 2020, a deadly epidemic like Corona had killed lakhs of people. The figures of how many deaths occurred due to Corona during that time were always in question. Now on Tuesday, the government has released the figures, in which it has been told that in the year 2020 compared to 2019, 4.74 lakh deaths have increased and the number of births has decreased by 5.98 lakh. These things have come to the fore in the Civil Registration System (CRS) 2020 released by the Union Home Ministry. The country’s most populous state UP also has the highest number of births and deaths. However, Maharashtra is at the forefront of neonatal deaths. At the same time, Nagaland is the only state in the country where no newborn died during 2020.

90% of deaths in just 11 states
If we look at the statistics of registration of births in the last 5 years, then there has been ups and downs. There were 2.22 crore berth registrations in 2016, 2.21 in 2017, 2.32 in 2018, 2.48 in 2019 and 2.42 crore in 2020. At the same time, there was a steady increase in death registration. It stood at 63.49 lakhs in 2016, which rose to 81.15 lakhs in 2020. According to the data, there are 15 states with more than 90% birth registration and 11 with death registration.

2.42 crore babies were born, 81.1 lakh people died
States such as Maharashtra, Bihar, Gujarat, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Assam and Haryana are the major contributors to the increased number of deaths recorded from 2019 to 2020. In 2020, a total of 2.42 crore children were born and a total of 81.1 lakh people died.

Newborn deaths are increasing in cities as compared to villages
In the year 2020, 14,3379 newborns died, of which 33,582 were from villages and 10,9797 were from cities. However, if we look at the total deaths, more deaths were recorded in the villages. If we look at the deaths on the basis of gender, there were 83,313 boys and 60,028 girls among the newborns who died in 2020.

Punjab ahead in registration of death
In Punjab, 98.8% of deaths are registered within 21 days. Chandigarh comes second with 97.5% in this list. In Gujarat, 99.8% of the births are registered in 21 days. In this list, Madhya Pradesh is at number 17, Rajasthan at number 19 and Bihar at number 22.

Birth-death registration has increased in 31 years
In the year 1989, 31 lakh deaths were registered, which reached 81 lakh in 2020. At the same time, in 1989 itself, 1.10 crore births were registered, which reached 2.42 crore in 2020. Of the 2.42 crore children born in 2020, 1.25 crore (52%) were boys and 1.16 crore (48%) were girls. Of the 81.15 lakh people who died during this period, 48.82 lakh (60%) are males and 32.33 lakh (40%) are females.
