Washing clothes for a family brought disaster. Five members of a family, including three children, drowned in a mine filled with water while washing clothes in Thane district’s Dombivali East on Saturday.

The victims have been identified as Meera Gaikwad (55), her daughter-in-law Apeksha Gaikwad (30), and her grandsons Mayuresh Gaikwad (14), Moksh Gaikwad (13) and Siddhesh Gaikwad (14). The five deceased are reportedly residents of Desale Pada.

More family members also jumped to save the children, but no one knew how to swim.

There is shortage of water in the area
According to the police, “The incident took place at around 4 pm in Sandap village. While the daughter-in-law and grandmother were washing clothes, one of the children slipped and fell into the water. When others jumped into the water to save the child, they all drowned. ,

Eyewitnesses of the incident informed the police and fire brigade. While the fire brigade team pulled out all the five family members, doctors at the hospital declared them brought dead. According to local residents, many people wash clothes in the mine due to paucity of water in the area.

A resident said, “There is water shortage in the village and adjoining areas like Desale Pada and Bhopar. People come to the mine to wash their clothes.”

According to the police, there was no water supply in the area on Saturday.
