The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake struck near the city of Khoy in West Azerbaijan province at 13:38 pm (1008 GMT), with a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).

At least 70 people were injured on Wednesday after a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck northwestern Iran near the border with Turkey, state media said.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake struck near the city of Khoy in West Azerbaijan province at 13:38 pm (1008 GMT), with a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).

The Seismology Center of Tehran University said the quake had a magnitude of 5.4 and a depth of 12 kilometers (7.45 miles).

State television cited officials in the area as saying that at least “70 people were injured” trying to flee to safety, and that more than 300 homes were damaged in 15 villages.

Iran sits across the boundaries of several major tectonic plates and experiences frequent seismic activity.

In February 2020, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake devastated the western village of Habash-e Ola, on the border with neighboring Turkey, killing at least nine people.
