Manipur Influence: Over 40 Meitei people have migrated from Mizoram to Assam after a former insurgent group asked the community to leave the state after a video of two women being paraded naked in Manipur went viral, officials said on Sunday (July 23).

These people reached Silchar from neighboring Mizoram on Saturday night. Cachar Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta said they have been kept in a building in Lakhipur development block in Binnakandi area.

“These are all affluent families and they came in their own vehicles. Some are college professors, while some work as senior government officials. There has been no attack in Mizoram so far,” he said.

The Mizoram government was providing security to him. They did not want to take any risk and had come to Assam for their safety, the official said.

The SP said, “They are saying that they will stay here till the situation becomes normal.” He said that the Assam Police is providing security to them.

Thousands of people from various communities fled Manipur

Thousands of people from the Meitei, Kuki and Hamar communities fled Manipur, and have been living in Assam since ethnic violence broke out in the state on 3 May.

The Mizoram government yesterday reassured the Meitei community in the state.

The government’s assurance comes amid reports of an ex-militants organization in Mizoram fleeing the state following an ‘advise’ asking them to leave the state due to tension triggered by a viral video of two women being paraded naked by a mob in Manipur.

Mizoram Police said that many Meitei people left for their home states on Saturday amid rising tension.

A few thousand Meites, mostly from Manipur and southern Assam, live in Mizoram.
