Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing a spike similar to the terror attacks against civilians and security forces in October. It marks a busy year for the security forces in the Valley with the seizure of drones in the border areas by the Border Security Force (BSF).
According to the data, a huge increase was recorded in the seizure of ammunition for AK series weapons, pistols, rockets, bombs and grenades in 2021. These weapons are suspected to have been sent by Pakistan-based terrorist organizations to disturb the law and order situation in the Valley. These seizures are different from other seizures made in recent times as they were intercepted and confiscated during infiltration attempts or were found a few meters away from the border.
Terrorists involved in recent attacks have also been found using pistols, grenades and bombs that can be linked to those confiscated from the border.
Till February this year, the BSF has seized 50 arms, 700 rounds of ammunition, six detonators and 5 kg of explosives from the border.
In 2021, especially in October, there were casualties in the Valley with civilians and security forces personnel under a series of hit-and-run attacks. This coincides with a nearly 250% increase in pistol seizures in the last two years. In 2019, a total of 35 pistols were recovered by BSF, which rose to 92 in 2021. This year, in the first 58 days, BSF recovered one pistol every third day.
In 2019 and 2020, BSF seized a total of 483 AK-series ammunition. In 2021 alone, the force seized 1,287 rounds of ammunition of the same series. The total grenades seized in 2019 and 2020 were 31, but last year, 32 grenades were recovered by the BSF from the border.
Top BSF officials say the increase in seizures from the border is an indication that Pakistan sent a huge amount of arms and ammunition to India in 2021 and is continuing to do so this year as well. He said that due to paucity of funds with the terrorist organizations, they are sending pistols and grenades to revive the fear in the Valley.
“BSF seizures are done at the border, not inside a city. The increase in pistols and grenades is directly related to attacks. Even in the October attacks, terrorists used pistols to target civilians. This year, it is expected that terrorist organizations will try to pursue their agenda with full force,” a senior BSF official told News18.com.
