4 soldiers, policemen killed in ambush by Pakistan Taliban near Afghan border

The Pakistani Taliban targeted security forces in a vehicle traveling near the Afghan border, killing four soldiers and a policeman, the military said on Saturday.

In a statement, he said the attack took place in the Spinwam area of North Waziristan and that retaliation against the terrorists was underway.

The Pakistani Taliban, known as TTP or Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, operates in tribal areas bordering Afghanistan.

The group claimed responsibility in a statement, saying it had ambushed a raiding party in the area on Friday. The military did not say when the attack took place.

North Waziristan and other tribal areas were once safe havens for militants, although this has diminished after several government operations to clear the areas. Most groups operate on both sides of the open border with Afghanistan, and strike sporadically against security forces.
