Of the four ASIs, three are from Kaliaganj police station and one from Raiganj police station.

Four police officers of the rank of Assistant Sub Inspector of Police (ASI) were suspended on Monday for allegedly dragging the body of a minor girl in Kaliaganj in West Bengal’s North Dinajpur district. A senior official gave this information.

Of the four ASIs, three are from Kaliaganj police station and one from Raiganj police station.

“We have suspended four ASIs for allegedly dragging the body of a minor girl on April 21,” the official said.

On Friday, the girl’s body was found floating in a canal in Kaliaganj. Accusing her of rape and murder, the local people blocked the road by burning tires and torched several shops.

While getting the dead body off, the police found it dragging on the road. A video purportedly showing the incident went viral.

North Dinajpur Superintendent of Police MD Sana Akhtar said that the primary post-mortem report revealed that there was no injury on the body.

However, based on a complaint filed by the girl’s mother, a case was registered under Indian Penal Code section 302 (murder) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.

A team of officials led by Priyank Kanungo, chairman of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, met the family of the deceased on Sunday. The NCPCR has sought a report from the state DGP on the matter by Monday.
