Railways has announced that Rail Protection System ‘Kavach’ will be installed on Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Kolkata main lines. The total distance will be 3000 kms. According to a railway official, a total of Rs 1000 crore will be spent on the installation of the armor.

Its purpose is to provide fool proof security to train operations. This will prevent the collision of two trains coming on the same track. By doing this, passengers will now be able to stay more safe. It will be installed under Mission Raftaar.

Armor will deteriorate only once in 10 thousand years
According to railway officials – this armor system is likely to be damaged only once in 10 thousand years. As a part of self-reliant India, 2,000 km of network will be covered for security and capacity addition in FY 2022-23. At present, Kavach has been installed on South Central Railway on 1098 km route. The target is to install Kavach on about 4000 to 5000 km of rail route every year.

Armor will be fitted in 760 locomotives
Railways has invited 11 tenders to fit this technology in more than 3000 km and 760 locomotives. The transmitters for both the trains will be fitted inside the loco. So that both the loco pilots can interact with each other continuously by using ultra high radio frequency to control the brakes. The cost of fitting this technology inside the engine would be Rs 60 lakh per loco.

understand railroad system
Anti Train Collision Technology or Rail Kavach technology is the world’s cheapest and an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. The armor is there to provide protection to trains crossing signals at danger (red) and to prevent collisions. If the train driver fails the speed limit, it automatically activates the train braking system. Apart from this, it also prevents collision between two engines on the same track.

Trial has been done in the presence of Railway Minister
These days a massive work is being done by Indian Railways to secure rail operations and under Zero Accident Mission. Under this, on March 4 this month, Kavach technology was tested to avoid rail accidents and collisions. Its trial has already been done in Hyderabad in the presence of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav.

In this, two trains were run face to face on the same track. In one of the trains, the Railway Minister was also aboard. The collision of both the trains was prevented in time by Kavach technology.
