Virat Kohli made his ODI debut for India against Sri Lanka in Dambulla on August 18, 2008, and in the last 16 years, he has established himself as one of the greatest cricketers of all time.

Virat Kohli made his international debut for India on August 18, 2008, during an ODI match against Sri Lanka in Dambulla. He opened the inning for India in his first match and scored 12 runs. In the last 16 years, Kohli has played close to 300 one-day matches for India and has established himself as one of the greatest batters of all time. He is the third-leading run scorer in the 50-over format of the game and has also hammered the most number of centuries.

On the 16th anniversary of Virat’s debut in international cricket, here’s a look at his three ODI records that will be difficult for any cricketer in the future to break:

Most 100s in ODIs: Virat holds the record for scoring the most 100s in ODI cricket. In 295 50-over matches played so far, the former India captain has smashed 50 centuries. He broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most centuries (49) during India’s ODI World Cup 2023 semifinal match played against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 15.

Most 100s against one team in ODIs: Kohli has scored 10 centuries in 56 ODIs played so far against Sri Lanka and has nine triple-digit scores to his name in 43 ODIs against the West Indies. He holds the record for hitting most 100s against one team in the 50-over format of the game. Tendulkar also hammered nine centuries in 71 ODIs against Australia during his playing days.

Most runs in a single edition of the ODI World Cup: Virat holds the record for scoring the most runs in a single edition of the ODI World Cup. He achieved the feat during the 2023 edition of the men’s 50-over megaevent, played entirely in India. In 11 matches for the Men in Blue, Kohli, with the help of three centuries and six fifties, amassed a total of 765 runs. He was the first and only batter to date to score more than 700 runs in one edition of the ODI World Cup.

Virat, who is still going strong, will have a chance to break Tendulkar’s record for most runs in ODI cricket. He has 13,906 runs to his name as of now and needs around 4500 runs to go past Sachin’s tally.
