3 dacoits killed in Assam, bank robbery failed: Police Guwahati News – Times of India

Guwahati/Kokrajhar: Three suspected dacoits shot dead in an attempt to rob a bank Assam‘s Kokrajhari district in the early hours of Sunday, police said.
Police had intelligence that a gang of dacoits would attempt to rob Allahabad Bank in branch Bhotgaon Near Kokrajhar town, a senior police officer from the district said.
He said an earlier attempt to rob the same branch three months ago was foiled.
The gang was nabbed around 2.30 pm at Chengmari near Bhotgaon, the official said.
He said they allegedly opened fire on the security personnel and three dacoits were injured in retaliatory firing by the police.
The other gang members managed to escape, the officer said.
The injured dacoits were rushed to a nearby hospital where they were declared brought dead, he said.
The official said motorcycles, mobile phones, tools, gas cutters, two pistols and oxygen cylinders were recovered from the slain.
Director General of Police Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta said, “The operation was going on till late night to flush out the rest of the dacoits.”
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma appreciated the efforts of the police in preventing bank robbery.
“A robbery gang was neutralized Assam Police in Kokrajhar. This prevented a huge bank robbery,” he said.
Sarma also lauded the police for nabbing 15 alleged Taliban supporters from different parts of the state on Saturday.
“Assam has to be crime-free. Murder, violence, hatred – all these have to be eliminated from the state. And we will keep working till we achieve our goal,” he said.
With the incident, the death toll in alleged police encounters in the state rose to 20, while 31 people were injured as they allegedly attempted to escape from custody since the new BJP government led by Sarma took over in May. did.
Sarma’s government has come under fire from opposition parties and rights activists for the increasing number of people being killed in police firing.
The chief minister, however, has said that the state police has “full operational freedom” to fight criminals within the ambit of the law.
