3 booked for fire in illegal oil godown.  Surat News – Times of India

Surat: The Lalgate police on Thursday registered a case against three persons for endangering human life in a fire that broke out at an illegal oil godown in Rajawadi area. Had the local people and fire brigade not controlled it immediately, the fire would have caused havoc in the congested residential area.

A case was registered against the accused under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 336 (act endangering human life), 436 (mischief with fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house) and 427 ( causing damage amounting to fifty rupees).
Bagiya’s motorcycle which was parked in the parking lot of his apartment caught fire. Wooden frames and furniture were also damaged in the fire that broke out around 3.30 pm after oil spilled on the road outside the godown, police said.
In his complaint, Bagiya alleged that the local people had on several occasions in the recent past warned the accused about the oil spill on the road which could lead to a serious accident. But they did not take necessary steps, the residents alleged.
fire department wrote letter to central zone office Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), in relation to the illegally operated oil godown by the District Collector’s office and the police. Police sources said that the accused used to trade in used oil and used to process purification in the godown. They did not develop any fire safety infrastructure or approached the fire department for NOC.
“The fire department was not aware that such a huge quantity of oil had accumulated on the spot. There was no fire prevention infrastructure and this could have led to a massive fire,” said a fire official.
