Rescue teams have recovered the bodies of three workers in a flood tunnel under construction in the southern Chinese city and are continuing to search for 11 other workers trapped since Thursday.

Crews are also working to remove water from the Shijingshan Tunnel, which is located under a reservoir and was part of an expressway being built in the city of Zhuhai in Guangdong province, close to Hong Kong and Macao. Divers and robots have also been involved in efforts to avoid carbon monoxide fumes from machinery used in the tunnel as part of the operation.

The cause of the collapse is still being investigated. Reports said that an unusual noise was heard and pieces of material started falling on one side of the two-tube tunnel. People were ordered to evacuate after the water arrived.

Zhuhai is a relatively prosperous coastal city at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta, which is now being highly developed for manufacturing and high-tech industries.

It was one of China’s earliest special economic zones when the ruling Communist Party began opening up the nation’s economy nearly 40 years ago.
