Kolkata: A 22-year-old man reportedly died by suicide at his residence near Sarsuna College on Thursday morning. Sources said the victim, Firoz Gazi, a small-time transporter, had been depressed after his wife had returned to her father’s house at Lake Town following arguments over several issues. The couple got married four and a half months ago.
“There were several reasons why the couple could not reconcile. Gazi’s family has informed us that his wife had claimed she was “uncomfortable” residing at Sarsuna with him and wanted to settle somewhere closer home. We have also reasons to suspect that Gazi’s financial condition too had come under his wife’s scrutiny. However, these are all claims made by Gazi’s family. We will speak to his wife soon,” said an investigating officer from Sarsuna police station.
“His family tried to wake him up on Thursday at 6am as he had to send a car to a client earlier in the day. When they got no response, they broke open the door and found him hanging from the ceiling. He was rushed to Vidyasagar Hospital where he was declared brought dead. “We are investigating the case, but we have not received any formal complaint so far. We have begun an inquest,” said an officer. Locals at Sarsuna said Gazi was excited about his marriage and had waited for Covid to ebb so that he could get married with a grand reception, in the presence of family and friends.
Every third person who died by suicide in Bengal last year was going through some family or relationship trouble. This was revealed in the report titled ‘Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India 2021’ released by the National Crime Records Bureau a couple of days ago.
