This is the picture of the grand alliance of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

After the victory in Karnataka, the Congress has taken some important decisions regarding the upcoming assembly elections and the next general elections. The party has also agreed on these. Now the steering committee of the bus party has to be stamped. The blueprint for uniting the opposition for 2024 has been decided. Congress is ready for opposition unity, but will not fight on less than 350 seats.

According to sources, the party has also informed about this to the friendly parties engaged in uniting the opposition parties. Regarding this, preparations are on to unite the opposition on the initiative of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. A meeting regarding this was first held in Patna on 12th June. However, due to the unavailability of Rahul and Kharge, it has been postponed for the time being.

Congress will not limit itself to 250 seats
According to sources, the Congress will not limit itself to 250 seats. However, leaders in favor of opposition unity like Nitish and Mamta Banerjee are indicating the same. It is very clear in the party that in the name of opposition unity, regional parties want votes, views and mass base of Congress, but they have nothing to give in return.

Rahul Gandhi has indicated the same abroad. He says that there has to be some ‘give and take’ for unity. In such a situation, Congress will not fight below 350 seats despite the appeal of regional parties and want of every compromise to defeat BJP. These are the seats where there was a direct contest between the Congress and the BJP in 2009.

According to the Congress, regional parties are in a direct fight with the BJP on 140 seats. In 2014 and 2019, the seats of direct contest between BJP and Congress had come down to around 260, but the Congress party is considering 2009 as the benchmark. According to sources, the seat-sharing may happen after December.

Alliance with YSRC, TDP, BJD not possible
Despite the desire to keep the BJP away from power in 2024, the equations of some states are such that an alliance with regional parties is not possible. Congress is ready to share the platform of opposition unity with these parties. But, there is no scope for electoral compromise. These include YSRC and TDP in Andhra, BJD in Odisha, BRS in Telangana, Trinamool in Bengal and Left Front in Kerala.

There is a big challenge for AAP
There is more doubt in Congress on alliance with AAP in Punjab-Delhi. The party does not want to give chance to regional parties by reducing votes in these states. This time AAP has won the assembly elections in Punjab. However, in the 2019 general elections, Congress got 40.1% votes and AAP got 7.4% votes. Whereas, BJP won all 7 seats in Delhi, but Congress’s vote was 22.51% and AAP’s 18.11%.

Sources say that the party’s focus is currently on the elections to be held in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Telangana this year. During this, the Congress will be an ally in the effort of opposition unity, but the seats will be decided after these elections.
